The auction house has opened up its metaverse auction software to 13 hand-selected artists.Thirteen digital artists approved by the Sotheby’s auction house—including generative artist Tyler Hobbs, AI artist Claire Silver and artist/writer Sarah Zucker—are now allowed to sell their artwork directly to their audience without running it by the New York institution.
Announced today, a the newly launched secondary sales platform, accessible via the Sotheby’s Metaverse virtual store, will let artists sell both existing and yet-to-be-created artworks. Other approved artists are: XCOPY , Diana Sinclair, IX Shells, Refik Anadol, Sofia Crespo, Sam Spratt, Pindar van Arman, Osinachi, Hackatao and Sebastião Salgado.Similar to other exchanges that honor royalty payments encoded into smart contracts by the artists, Sotheby’s will pay out royalties on transactions conducted on the Sotheby’s Metaverse platform. But NFT owners are also free to take their NFTs to other exchanges that don’t honor royalties.
