South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will visit Tokyo for talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida next week, a resumption of two-way summit diplomacy after more than a decade

TOKYO— as tensions with North Korea and China drive the U.S. allies to work more closely together.

Mr. Yoon has sought to improve ties with Japan, with encouragement from the U.S., to better coordinate in areas such as missile defense as North Korea advances its ballistic-missile and nuclear programs. Japan is also eager to build cooperation among nations in the region to counter China’s military and economic power.

Ties between Tokyo and Seoul are often dogged by disputes over issues related to Japan’s colonization of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945. The last time a Japanese or South Korean leader traveled to the other country solely for a summit meeting was in December 2011, when former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak visited Japan.
