South Koreans are reacting with rare collective joy after director Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” won the Oscar for best picture and three other awards. The first ever Oscar win for the nation comes as it struggles against a new virus and amid nuclear concerns.
Film club members celebrate as they watch a TV live broadcasting of South Korean director Bong Joon Ho's "Parasite" receiving the award for best picture at the Oscars, at the Yeonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, Monday, Feb. 10, 2020.
“Can you believe that ‘parasite’ won the Academy best picture?” South Korea’s biggest newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, said in a headline. “It rewrote the Academy’s 92-year-old history.” Moon and his advisers began a regularly scheduled meeting by clapping their hands to celebrate Bong’s wins.
