A Cook County pilot program meant to boost ridership on mass transit lines in the south and southwest suburbs, particularly in lower-income service areas, has achieved some of its stated goals.
Fares on the Metra Electric line were cut in half under a pilot program meant to increase affordability of mass transit in the south suburbs and on Chicago’s South Side.
Also, ridership on the Electric and Rock Island lines still, despite the fare cuts, remained 60% below pre-COVID pandemic levels, the report found. The Pace Halsted 352 route between the Chicago Transit Authority’s Red Line station at 95th Street and the Dan Ryan and Pace’s Chicago Heights terminal is also part of the Fair Transit pilot. For example, the frequency of buses during weekday peak hours in Chicago Heights, East Hazel Crest, Harvey and Homewood increased to six per hour from the two per hour before the program.Advertisement
