'SpaceCamp' movie star Lea Thompson is back in Huntsville this weekend 🚀
HSV Expo launched in 2016 as a one-day event and drew around 1,500 people. In 2021, about 9,000 attended over three days, says owner, founder and operator Jeremy Long, who expects attendance of at least 10,000 this year. Around 70 percent of fans attending are from Madison County, but some come from as far as California. Past guests include comic-book legends like Chris Claremont and Marv Wolfman, and “Mandalorian” actor Emily Swallow.
As for “SpaceCamp,” fate just wasn’t on the side of that film. Earlier that year, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded about a minute after launch, killing all seven astronauts aboard. The Challenger tragedy cast a shadow of the film, which fared poorly at the box-office. “SpaceCamp” was also critically panned.
