The magnetosphere is the region surrounding the planet influenced by its magnetic field.A Kanazawa University team studied data acquired by the Mio instrument onboard the BepiColombo spacecraft, which is scheduled to enter's orbit in 2025.

In 2021 and 2022, the spacecraft flew by Mercury at around 200 kilometers. It obtained data and observations on Mercury's magnetic field during these flybys. This result prompted the hypothesis that a distinct physical process generates the chorus waves in the dawn sector or limits the appearance of chorus waves in other places.
