. “For over 60 years, the “egg” church was an icon of Oklahoma City’s skyline, and now it is gone.”

Built in the mid 1950s by the local architecture firm Conner & Pojezny, the futuristic structure was marked by its egg-like thin-shell concrete dome, a dramatic work of modern engineering. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, and listed om Preservation Oklahoma’s Most Endangered Places list in 2017 and 2019.

“We are all struggling to find out what happened behind the scenes at First Christian Church,” says Banks. “Shock is the word of the day.” The structure had recently undergone an asbestos abatement process to make it more attractive to buyers, and several parties had expressed interest in its acquisition and preservation.
