And thus, Spotify finds itself in the same position that Facebook did several years ago, forced to publicly grapple with criticism about what it allows. It’s really the first time Spotify has found itself under this much scrutiny over the matter, much like the point in time after the 2016 election when the world was forced to consider, and reconsider, exactly what information existed, and should exist, on Facebook.
So if Spotify aims to mimic Facebook, what happens next? Well, for a long time after 2016, Facebook didn’t budge on its content moderation stance: It wasn’t going to begin taking down stuff. Eventually, the pressure got to Facebook—to an extent. Over the last several years, it has stepped up some moderation efforts, the most notable example being its suspension of President Trump. Another is that Facebook no longer allows Holocaust denialism.
In echoing Zuckerberg, Ek seems inclined to go for the same scenario: let the critics youl, focus on the shares. It remains to be seen if Spotify’s investors will be as patient as Facebook’s. Last week, Spotify stock dropped 7.3%, a time when the Nasdaq rose 2.5%, a sign that Spotify shareholders possibly won’t want to stomach as much as Facebook’s.
