Houston photographer Mark Burns is showing his panoramic photographs in the exhibit “America’s Western Landscape" at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts in Spring.Harris County has another museum of fine arts, one that isn’t located in the Museum District.
The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts in Spring is a non-collecting institution, borrowing from public and private collections, said director Courtney Gardner. “So, if you visit three or four times a year, you will never see the same thing twice,” she said. Currently, the museum is showing “America’s Western Landscape,” an exhibit of Houston photographer Marks Burns’ panoramic works. With his large format photography, he employs silver gelatin and platinum printmaking techniques. He combines his traditional photography background with high-tech digital equipment.
“With the expansive vistas of the American West, I tended to work more with my panorama cameras during this project,” Burns said. “It’s a different way of seeing.”Burns said he wanted to show “the raw beauty, vistas and natural diversity of the American West” through these 50 black and white, color and hand-tinted photographs. The latter is a technique that was common in the late 1800s through the mid-1900s.
