That “little voice” whispering it’s time to retire will have to wait while Gregg...

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, right, talks with guard Malaki Branham during the first half of the team's NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks, Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, in San Antonio. The Mavericks won 126-125. NEW YORK — With his 74th birthday just a few weeks away, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich shared his thoughts on when he will know it’s time to retire.

With coachable Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson as two of the cornerstones of the Spurs’ rebuilding project, and a group that in general is a lot of fun to be around, that “little voice” just might stay mum a while longer. “He has a great attitude, a great sense of humor, which makes it much easier to coach a player because you can screw with him,” Popovich said. “He can do it back to you and you enjoy working together. He has that, so it has been a lot of fun.”

Spurs forward Keldon Johnson, who ranks just ahead of Vassell for the team lead in scoring with a 21.5 average, also shares a give-and-take relationship with the coach. “I always tell him, ‘Get your name in the paper, shoot it, let people notice,’ “ Popovich said. “And now he doesn’t feel guilty. He wants to shoot it.”When it comes to Johnson, Popovich takes pride in seeing the 23-year-old player he once described as a “mustang” become more polished offensively.
