Johnson’s strong ties to the West Side stem from the community being “one of the first” that supported him in his first year.Keldon Johnson was like a jittery rookie making his NBA debut when he slipped on a Santa Claus suit last year to deliver much-needed presents to kids at the West Side’s Cassiano Homes.
And he insisted that his performance as Kriss Kringle take place again on the economically challenged West Side, where his strong bonds with the community are underscored by his support for Lanier and the Voks basketball program. With the Spurs off last Tuesday after a five-day trip that included games in Mexico City and Houston, “Keldon Claus” handed out wrapped gifts, $100 H-E-B gift cards and vouchers for tickets to future Spurs games to families at Opportunity Home SA’s West Side office next to its Villa Veramendi Apartments.Two of Johnson’s teammates, 19-year-old rookies Jeremy Sochan and Malaki Branham, assisted him as elves wearing the traditional green garb, curly-toed shoes and pointed hats.
Alvarado, a single parent who works for a clothing store, has six children ages 6 through 16, including 15-year-old Savannah, a 10th-grader at Lanier.
