After allowing sellers to accept contactless payments with just their iPhones last year, Square will make the same move for merchants that have Android devices.
The company, which is part of Block Inc. SQ , announced Wednesday that it was rolling out Tap to Pay on Android in the U.S. and five international markets. The move is intended to make it easier for merchants to accept card-based payments without special hardware, letting consumers tap their mobile wallets or contactless cards against a merchant’s phone to buy something.
The Android option might bring in more “price sensitive” sellers than the iPhone program did, Sowa added, and it could open up new opportunities for Square internationally. While the company is launching Tap to Pay on Android in international markets where it’s already active, the company doesn’t have its Square “magstripe” reader product in those countries because swipe payments aren’t prevalent there.
