St. Augustine rallies from five points down in the final quarter to defeat Valencia West Ranch in the Open Division boys basketball Southern California Regionals
Playing perhaps its best game of the season against a much larger opponent, St. Augustine roared back from five points down in the fourth quarter to beat Valencia West Ranch 63-60 before a crazy standing-room-only crowd at St. Augustine in a Southern California Regional Open Division quarterfinal.West Ranch has a 7-foot, 4-star player headed to Texas Tech , a 6-7 Boise State signee and a four-star wing in James Evans.
West Ranch was 2-1 in the Southern Section’s Open Division pool play, beating Bellflower St. John Bosco, ranked No. 5 in the state, St. Bernard, ranked No. 25, before losing to No. 1 L.A. Harvard-Westlake 59-50. The Saints trailed 52-47 with 5:01 to play and took the lead at 57-56 on a LoLo Rudolph bucket with 2:50 remaining.
West Ranch then missed the front end of a one-on-one with 5 seconds left and Ian de la Rosa’s 11th rebound of the game sealed it for St. Augustine. Dixon paced the Saints with 21 points, and he added nine rebounds and a pair of blocks. Rudolph finished with 16 points, while de la Rosa had 10 points to go with his team-leading 11 rebounds. Matingou added nine points.
