Lower Decks season 4, episode 9, "The Inner Fight" reveals more about Mariner's backstory, including her friendship with Star Trek: The Next Generation's Ensign Sito Jaxa , and her service during the Dominion War.
Star Trek legend Majel Barrett believed that the Dominion War was a departure from Gene Roddenberry's original vision. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine writer Ronald D. The critical success of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dominion War is likely why the franchise began exploring more military oriented storytelling. Star Trek: Enterprise had the Temporal Cold War and the devastating Xindi War.
All of these stories of war in Star Trek are a perfect way to keep Gene Roddenberry's vision fresh and interesting. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dominion War posed the question of what happens when a powerful galactic force doesn't have the same viewpoint as the peace-loving Federation. War is never taken lightly in the Star Trek universe, and nor should it be.
