A fun tribute.

The artist for the Star Trek: Lower Decks comic has mashed up the beloved cartoon with the X-Men's iconic swimsuit pin-up. Chris Fenoglio, who drew last year’s critically acclaimed Lower Decks comic from IDW, has created Marvel/Star Trek mash-ups in the past. Now, he unveils his latest - and it brings together the Lower Decks crew to recreate a legendary pin-up from the 1990s.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Chris Fenoglio unveiled the art in a post on X. Released to coincide with the recent premiere of season four of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the image shows the crew of the Cerritos mixing by a pool. Longtime comic book fans will recognize it as a homage to a swimsuit pin-up, drawn by Jim Lee, that appeared in the back of 1991's X-Men #1.

Star Trek's Beach Day Honors Marvel Art Last year, IDW released a Lower Decks comic to tie in to the popular animated series. The book was written by Ryan North and drawn by Chris Fenoglio, and was a hit with fans. The book brought Lower Decks' style and sensibility to comics, and since its conclusion, Fenoglio has kept busy with some amazing art inspired by the series.

The X-Men Swimsuit Pin-Up Is Iconic Some of these Lower Decks-inspired pieces are mashups with popular Marvel characters and stories. Previously, Fenoglio drew a variant cover that featured Shaxs, Lower Decks gung-ho tactical officer, in a pose similar to Thanos’ on the cover of Infinity Gauntlet #1. The X-Men pin-up featured the then-current lineup of the team, lounging around the pool in skimpy outfits.

Jim Lee’s X-Men pin-up was a fun and light-hearted look at the team, showing them in a moment of much-needed downtime. Likewise, Lower Decks is a fun and loving take on the Star Trek franchise. Jim Lee’s swimsuit art invited fans not to take the X-Men so seriously, while still enjoying what made each character unique - just as Lower Decks does with Star Trek. While mashing Star Trek: Lower Decks with X-Men swimsuit art may seem odd at first, here it makes perfect sense.
