A Star Trek Annual reveals the Doctor's legacy.

From Moriarty on Star Trek: The Next Generation, to Vic Fontaine on Deep Space Nine, to the EMH on Voyager, Star Trek has reckoned with the possibilities of holographic intelligence since it first depicted holograms. Still, there remains much room in the Star Trek Expanded Universe for further exploration of this new nonorganic form of life. Star Trek Annual 2023 #1 uses this opportunity to tell a classic first contact story – one which hinges on a key artifact from the franchise's history.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Trek Annual 2023 #1 depicts an encounter between the USS Theseus and a group of holograms seeking independence. Theseus, focus of IDW's current ongoing Star Trek series, boasts a stacked crew with representatives from most previous incarnations of Trek. Captained by Deep Space Nine's Benjamin Sisko, the crew also includes Data and Beverly Crusher and Tom Paris .

A New Life Form Wears Old Faces to Connect with the Crew of the Theseus Photons Be Free first appeared in the Voyager season seven episode "Author, Author." The Doctor submits his holonovel to a publisher; subsequently, when he seeks to revise the manuscript, the publisher denies him this right on the grounds that he lacks sentience.

Star Trek Annual 2023 #1 picks up on this narrative thread with several interesting approaches. To begin with, the holograms in the story take the forms of various familiar characters, allowing for visual cameos that include Jean-Luc Picard and William Riker, Spock, and others from throughout the franchise. Most notably, the issue's antagonist is itself a hologram, a security program that takes the form of who else but James T. Kirk.

The appearance of Kirk also provides an emotional connection for Scotty, who is able to use this in the end to help the security program join its fellow holograms as they are resettled on their own planet. Like many great Trek stories, this issue's premise is rooted in the unintended consequences of a prior Trek story: in this case, the "provocative" nature of The Doctor's holonovel and its hologram rights message.
