The Mandalorian movie looks set to be based on Legends' Heir to the Empire - which means it's time Star Wars made a decision about Mara Jade.
Star Wars' upcoming The Mandalorian era movie is all but confirmed to be an adaptation of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, which means it's finally time to decide whether Legends Jedi Mara Jade is canon. When Disney purchased Star Wars in 2012, they declared the old Expanded Universe range of novels to be non-canon . Since then, though, Lucasfilm has been absorbing the best elements of EU into new canon.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Star Wars Rebels, elements such as Mount Tantiss and the species of the Noghri were canonized, respectively. Mount Tantiss served as Thrawn's home base during the Thrawn trilogy, with the Noghri being the species of Thrawn's personal bodyguard-assassin Rukh.
Eventually, Jade is trained by Luke as a Jedi, and the two fall in love. This results in marriage between them, which yielded a child named Ben who later became essential to Legends' Second Galactic Civil War. Regardless, Jade's introduction in the Thrawn trilogy, and the other elements that have since been canonized, make it so that Mara is one of the few concepts from Zahn's original story that is not yet canon before production begins on the Star Wars Mandalorian movie.
Could Mara Jade Fit With Disney Canon? This begs the question of whether Jade will be made canon for FIloni's film and - if so - if she would fit into Disney's already established canon. Given that Star Wars is often implementing elements into canon that previously did not exist, it is not out of the realm of possibility for Mara Jade to be introduced to canon.
Given that it seems Filoni's film will reposition the main characters of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka to play the roles Luke, Leia, and Han did in the original Thrawn trilogy, Jade's connection to Skywalker seems impossible. While Luke could certainly have a cameo in the film, he is unlikely to have a major part due to the way Star Wars canon has been constructed differently to Legends, and the complications of CGI Luke.
