A brand new Star Wars novel has made C-3PO's subplot in The Rise of Skywalker even more unnecessary four years after the movie's release.
Star Wars has just revealed that C-3PO’s Sith subplot in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was completely unnecessary. In The Rise of Skywalker, C-3PO is forced to give up the entirety of his memory to be able to translate the runes on a Sith dagger. As it turns out, all protocol droids were once banned from openly translating the language of the Sith, a result of a Senate ruling, though the dark text itself is still readable to the droids.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Yet it’s hard to shake the feeling that there must have been an easier, less damaging way for Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron to get the dagger translated. Sadly, it is now clear there was. The new novel Star Wars: Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade by Delilah S. Dawson tells the story of fallen Jedi Iskat Akaris as she becomes one of Darth Vader’s Inquisitors in the wake of Order 66.
The Resistance Just Needed A Newer Model Of Protocol Droid In Rise Of Skywalker All Rey, Finn, and Poe realistically had to do was find a different, newer protocol droid. Threepio’s only issue is that he is a much older model. Given how much time had passed between the Empire taking control and the events of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, there are surely thousands, if not millions of other protocol droids in the galaxy that could have translated the dagger for them.
The reason droids are so important in Star Wars storytelling is that they truly add something to the experience. Each droid has its own personality, experience, and usefulness, and as such is much more than window dressing. Threepio’s memory being wiped for convoluted reasons in what is supposed to be an emotional scene – only to have that character-building moment ruined when C-3PO's memory is later restored by R2-D2 – highlights more of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s narrative issues.
