He took on this role after serving as Darth Maul's right-hand during the Clone Wars, but earned the nickname due to his dedication to the Empire and, particularly, Palpatine.
This also goes hand-in-hand with the theory of the Darksaber's crystal originating in a Force vergence on Mandalore. Given that the Darksaber is so different from any other lightsaber, it could very well be that the blade's creator, Tarre Vizsla, knew of a Force vergence on Mandalore that no one else did, and he found the crystal that powers the Darksaber within it.
