The number of workers who belong to unions had been dropping for decades, but recent studies show the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects on the labor force changed that, too.

Boykin, a Starbucks shift supervisor, hit their third year at the coffee shop shortly before the store won its union election. They worked at a couple of different stores in the area, including at St. Johns Town Center where there was “manager turnover like crazy.”

“It was shocking in the most positive way. I don’t necessarily know if there was a correlation between our stores. I think they had already had a lot of issues they wanted to resolve with a union,” Boykin said. “It felt really nice to not be the only store in Jacksonville working toward this.” Poindexter said there are a handful of reasons unions are seeing an uptick now when numbers had previously been declining, and it’s not all because of the pandemic. The wage gap, wealth gap and inflation have made people more interested in joint bargaining for better pay and working conditions.

He added that industries to watch as unionization grows in popularity include service industry workers and health care providers — those who were most at risk while doing their jobs during the pandemic and might now feel they aren’t or haven’t been treated fairly.
