Pay attention.Indiana lawmakers returned Jan. 9 to the Statehouse for the 2023 legislation session, during which they'll craft the state's next two-year budget.

That's not all they'll do, though. Hundreds of bills were filed at the start of session, though the majority won't make it across the finish line.His budget would give significant increases into K-12 schoolsIt doesn’t include an expansion of the state’s private school voucher program, but would eliminate textbooks fees for all public school students and income-eligible private school students — two places that the House Republican’s budget proposal could vary.

The Ways and Means committee has been conducting budget hearings, but hasn’t taken testimony or considered amendments toSchool choice options likely will be expanded this session.

Originally, SB 305 would have removed all eligibility criteria. It was amended in committee Jan. 26 to keep income eligibility guidelines and set aside at least half of the program’s funds to continue to be used for special education students.
