The bronze statue of the boy who battled leukemia and inspired the creation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation was stolen from its Phoenix office.

the 7-year-old boy whose battle with leukemia inspired the creation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America"We are sad to share that Tuesday, Jan. 3, around 10 p.m., the statue of Chris Greicius was stolen from the front of the Make-A-Wish America office on Highland Avenue," Hollie Costello, a spokesperson for Make-A-Wish Arizona, said in a statement.

The incident was reportedly captured by surveillance cameras which showed that after the cleaning company had left, a car with two unidentified individuals pulled into the parking lot and"harnessed a chain around the bronze statue to dislocate it from the base," the statement read.Officers responded to the incident on Wednesday just before 1 p.m., said Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Melissa Soliz.

Greicuis ultimately served as an inspiration for six individuals to later establish the Make-A-Wish organization during his battle with leukemia, which began in 1979. He was granted his wish on April 29, 1980, when the Arizona Department of Public Safety provided him with a uniform, a helicopter ride and the chance to meet any police officers that were available that day.

Later that same year, the Make-A-Wish headquarter was founded in Phoenix and the foundation has expanded to 52 chapters across the United States with more than 30 international affiliates."Make-A-Wish is saddened by this theft as Chris continues to be an inspiration for our mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses worldwide.

No other information was released Thursday, as there is currently no indication of who the suspects are, according to the Make-A-Wish statement. According to Soliz, an investigation was ongoing.
