Stella Jean's newest collaboration with Desigual brings her joyful designs to a whole new audience
Stella Jean has plenty on her plate. At the end of our interview, she casually mentions that she’s heading on a trip as a UN Goodwill Ambassador, though she can’t disclose the location. It’s not her first trip with the United Nations—she’s traveled to Uzbekistan, Benin, Burkina Faso, and other countries to meet female artisans. Her fall 2021 collection featured embroidery work by Kyrgyz women, whom she met through a UN initiative.
This is not directly germane to the topic at hand—we are meeting to discuss her collaboration with Desigual, which is available to shop today—but it does underscore Jean’s appreciation of culture and craft, which appears in all facets of her work. The Haitian-Italian designer doesn’t shy away from talking about important subjects, but she leads with joy in her clothing.
” she says. Indeed the 26-piece collection brings together a mishmash of references that could only be culled from personal experience. Some inspirations are overt, such as a bomber jacket that resembles a Haitian coffee bean sack and a coordinating fringed mini skirt. Others are more subtle, like a fabric that incorporates imagery of Haitian gingerbread houses, or patchwork inspired by Spain.
For the boldest of the bold, there are two accessories in the capsule that really capture your eye: a sandal with a red fringe ankle strap, and a rounded top hat in peach. For the understated, there’s a sophisticated black midi dress. One of the benefits of working with Desigual is that Jean can sell her design vision at a lower price point, thus opening herself up to new customers. The capsule’s prices range from $49.95 to $209.
As for what’s next for Jean, she is making a return to the Italian Fashion Chamber. She quit in 2020 amid the Black Lives Matter protests, due to the fact that she was the only Black member. “I said, ‘I won’t participate again until I’m not the only BIPOC here,’” she says. “After some long discussions, some great results, we will show what happened in these 2 years. I’ll be back, and I’ll be in good company.” In September, they will host a Black carpet in Milan.
