Perhaps no one in the world could lay claim to being a lifelong Houstonian quite like Miola Donahue Laws, who died Jan. 14 at 103.

The star musician spoke for a few minutes about the struggles the Black community has faced in Laws’ lifetime, ending his short speech with, “I love you, Momma Laws.” She started off making her own school clothes, but she eventually moved on to crafting bridesmaid dresses and bridal gowns and even traveling with famous musicians and designing their stage attire.
When she turned 103 last August, her church honored her with a car parade and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee declared Aug. 27 “Miola D. Laws Day.”
