I don’t know what to do with a network once I have it.spewing on how to build a professional network: Start a conversation with someone new. Make sure it’s a two-way street. Be authentic. Take advantage of virtual meetups. But as someone who identifies as a borderline introvert, I can tell you that it’s easier said than done.

I have gotten better at it, though, especially in the last two years when I was able to take advantage of technology and “meet” people remotely. Through LinkedIn, I’ve connected and worked with academics and researchers on some impactful articles. I’ve also found some allies by attending webinars and following up with the people whose work draws my interest. I’ve added value to these events by sharing my ideas and have learned from others in return.

These past two years have also taught me that networking doesn’t have to take place outside of your organization. You can network laterally, within your company, which can be a great place for beginners to start. Connecting withhas given me a broader, more varied view of the business, re-shaped the quality of my work, and even presented me with opportunities to work on exciting projects on other teams and departments.
