Ayer addresses the infamous Joker tattoos.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Even Suicide Squad director David Ayer agrees that Joker's tattoos were a bad idea after opening up about the creative choice for the 2016 film. As many times as Batman have been imagined in live-action, Joker has followed suit, with the Clown Prince of Crime having appeared in numerous DC projects over the decades.
However, Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad has always been a mixed bag when it comes to his reception with the audience, primarily for some of the visual changes to his appearance. One of the most talked about aspects was the decision to have Joker get tattoos, including the word "Damaged" on his forehead.
Almost eight years after the film's release, the Suicide Squad director agrees with the audience that it wasn't one of the better choices for his Joker. Ayer took to Twitter recently to address that while he "own the tattoo idea 100%," he admits that he regrets the choice that "created acrimony and division.
However, potentially the biggest reason as to why Joker's tattoos were hated - particularly the "Damaged" one - was because it felt like it was a too overt way of using the character's design to suggest his unhinged state. Joker is, without a doubt, one of the most famous villains in all of fiction, and it's a universal fact at this point that he is definitely a damaged figure, but having it literally written onto his forehead was perhaps overselling the point.
Despite this, Leto at least got to come back one last time in Zack Snyder's Justice League, but as part of the Knightmare timeline, showing the villain where he is at in the future. This time, however, the "Damaged" tattoo was nowhere to be seen, which was the better choice as that became Leto's final time playing the character. Following Suicide Squad, time will tell how future storytellers will approach Joker in upcoming live-action projects.
