If you are interested in trying snowshoeing or looking for a cure for your cabin fever, consider checking out Summit Metro Parks’ free snowshoe rental program at Liberty Park Nature Center.
The nature center started offering free snowshoe rental about four years ago, according to Summit Metro Parks Naturalist Joe Malmisur. The program began with a handful of pairs of snowshoes but has grown in popularity. The park currently has 20 pairs available for use on its Bluebird Trail when there is at least six inches of snow on the ground.If you have never tried the winter sport before, it isn’t hard to learn, according to Malmisur.
Malmisur advises first-timers to start with a shorter-distance walk because walking in snowshoes requires more use of hip flexor muscles than typical walking. However, it’s easy to build your way up to longer walks if you listen to your body, he said.“When I walk through the woods in snowshoes, I enjoy the peacefulness and the beauty of the snow glistening in the sun.
Community members can borrow snowshoes Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon-5 p.m. A signed waiver is required, and snowshoes must be returned to the nature center by 4:45 p.m.Teen Adventure Series: snowshoe hike and fire on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 5-7 p.m. The free program is open to teens ages 13-17 and includes a fire with marshmallows and hot chocolate after the hike. Snowshoe hike and fire on Sunday, Feb. 20 from 2-4 p.m. The free guided hike includes information about how animals cope with cold weather and why wind chill doesn’t affect plants.
