James Peterson, 47, his wife Evelyn Peterson, 42, and seven of their children, who ranged in age from 18 months to 17 years of age, were killed. The couple’s four-year-old daughter survived. The victims included Thomas Pederson, 32, his wife Bernadette Pederson, 32, four of their young children and a guest, Jean-Baptiste Herman, 48, of La Loche. According to a Feb. 1, 1969 StarPhoenix report, he was initially charged with seven counts of non-capital murder.According to an October 1969 StarPhoenix report, all of the victims were attacked with an axe.
