The cut stems from library materials on LGBTQ+ people that supervisors in Lancaster County say the community finds objectionable.

Dedicating only a few sentences to the issue at the end of a public meeting Thursday night, the board of supervisors in the Lancaster County township announced it would not give the library its customary $1,000 donation in 2024.

Residents brought the issue to the supervisors, who discussed it during an October meeting, which culminated in the funding cut last night. The decision was met with murmurs of affirmation from a handful of residents in attendance.Quarryville Library Center serves Bart, Colerain, Drumore, East Drumore, Eden, Fulton, Little Britain, Martic and Providence townships and Quarryville Borough.

Waite said he wants to reach out to the Fulton Township community to demonstrate the work it does, the variety of programs it offers and how receptive the staff is. Trout said that while some community members might be upset about some of the materials included at the library, bans can result in cuts to other programs or literature they might find positive.Ephrata Public Library, another member of the library system, had a similar situation in November 2022, when the Akron Borough Council proposed cutting funding over some objections to the library hosting a women’s health literacy class and a program to assist people experiencing mental health crises.

“It has come to our attention that we are not doing a good enough job at protecting the innocence of the children in our community,” Shivery said in the letter. “We provide information and materials for multiple viewpoints that do not censor, discriminate or segregate, therefore creating a safe place for everyone,” the board’s letter said.
