Houstonians may see big groups of fuzzy, small caterpillars on trees, patios, sides of houses and other structures as the small insects congregate for their mating season. While their congregation is not harmful, here are some tips and facts to know about caterpillar mating season.What are tent caterpillars?

Tent caterpillars form webs from their fecal matter, creating the tent-like structure that gives them their name. Instead of turning into a butterfly like other species of caterpillar, tent caterpillars grow into white moths. The caterpillars are attracted to over 100 different types of trees, namely pecan and mulberry, that are common in the Houston area. Suburban areas like Sugar Land tend to see the highest populations of the bugs.Tent caterpillars are not poisonous, but leave residue behind if they are killed on a surface.
