Musk’s comments angered Taiwan’s foreign minister, who said the democratically-ruled island is “not for sale” and “not part of” the People’s Republic of China.
Taiwan’s foreign minister has rebuked Elon Musk after he described the self-ruled island as an “integral part of China,” putting the billionaire in the midst of another sensitive geopolitical issue as he pushes for stronger economic ties between Washington and Beijing.
Musk compared Beijing’s stance on Taiwan—an island it claims but has never actually ruled—to Hawaii’s relationship with the United States. Wu pointedly suggested Musk ask the Chinese Communist Party—which founded modern day China after winning a civil war in 1949 that pushed what was left of the nationalist Kuomintang party to flee to Taiwan—to “open X to its people.” Like many Western social media platforms, X, which Musk controversially acquired as Twitter last year, is banned by authorities in mainland China, where Musk has been outspoken about the need for Washington to“Perhaps he thinks banning it [X] is a good policy, like turning off Starlink to thwart Ukraine’s counterstrike against Russia,” Wu said on X.
