Tanana Chiefs Conference votes to not renew membership to the Alaska Federation of Natives.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Due to decades of inaction, Tanana Chiefs Conference has voted to leave the Alaska Federation of Natives .

According to a council newsletter released in May, Tanana Chiefs Conference has decided to leave the Alaska Federation of Natives due to a lack of actions to protect subsistence lifestyles. TCC said that while they have invested many resources to AFN, over resolutions passed by AFN, that were meant to protect subsistence living, those resources have not been used to generate meaningful actions in relation to those resolutions.

The lack of meaningful actions lead to a vote by TCC’s tribal delegates. The vote of whether or not to renew membership with AFN ended with a majority of the delegates voting to leaving the federation. While TCC will no longer remain a part of AFN, the individual tribes that make up TCC are still able to retain membership with AFN according to the federations bylaws.Copyright 2023 KTVF.
