Lynda Haverstock became the first woman to lead Saskatchewan\u0027s Official Opposition in 1995, but resigned amid a caucus mutiny the same year.
Carla Beck was elected to lead the province’s New Democratic Party on Sunday, becoming the third woman to lead the Official Opposition. In 1995, she led the Liberals to a second-place showing and became Opposition leader. The 11 seats the Liberals won under Haverstock may sound meagre, but it was then the party’s best showing in two decades.Haverstock resigned as leader while facing a caucus revolt a couple of months after the 1995 election.
Yet we’ve known for a while that the next NDP and Opposition leader would be female, since only Beck, a Regina MLA, and Saskatoon lawyer Kaitlyn Harvey entered the race. While Saskatchewan has been serving up a steady diet of male political leaders, most of the rest of Canada has expanded its electoral menu.
Ontario and Quebec have elected female premiers and currently have women serving as Opposition leaders. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have never been governed by a woman premier, although both have had women lead the Official Opposition. Now Beck presents a new dynamic for Moe and the governing party, especially as she leads a caucus of mostly women.
