The book was nominated for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence and the Book Prize; it won Audible and the Audies' top awards for recorded memoir. Barack Obama named it one of his favorite books of the year; Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres have touted it on their national platforms, too.
What I think of as the two big themes of the book are family and education.
