Published 11:11 AM EST Feb 10, 2020For recently divorced Americans, alimony payments are no longer tax-deductible for the payer, and they aren't considered taxable income for the person receiving them, ending a decades-long practice. The changes affect divorce agreements signed after Dec. 31, 2018.
15. Paternity is presumed When a couple in Missouri gets a divorce, the male still has to pay alimony even if he is not the biological father of the child. The law in the state says that when a child is born to a woman while she is married or within 300 days of the divorce, her spouse is presumed to be the father. The only way to change that is to file a petition asking the court to determine he is not the biological father.
Prior to 2018, filers were allowed to take dependency exemptions for children. But those exemptions can no longer be used. Parents had previously been able to claim a dependency exemption for each child they supported, which worked like a tax deduction by reducing their taxable income.
