Both candidates are trying to appeal to voters on either side of the aisle in one of the year's most competitive U.S. Senate races.

In an increasingly polarized political environment, there are few races across the country this year in which the candidates are pitching bipartisanship. The U.S. Senate race between Republican Ted Cruz and Democrat Colin Allred may be one of the exceptions. In this race — the first time Cruz is on the ballot since narrowly winning reelection in 2018 — both candidates are touting their bipartisan accomplishments and trying to appeal to voters on either side of the aisle.

Ted Cruz is known as a ‘partisan knife fighter.’ Can he convince Texans he’s an effective lawmaker? Political observers and experts say it’s a particularly fascinating turn of public image for Cruz, who over his 12 years in Washington developed a reputation as a hyper-partisan rabble-rouser.

Ted Cruz leads Colin Allred by just 3 points in race for U.S. Senate, new poll shows In 2023, Cruz was ranked 89th out of 98 senators for their bipartisan record, according to the Lugar Center and the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy, which releases annual evaluations of bipartisanship in Congress and does not rank party leaders or members who have served for only a few months. Allred, out of 435 ranked House members , was placed at 210.
