Welch Middle School temporarily was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a teenager was sent to the hospital following a shooting in the parking lot of a nearby business, according to Houston Police Department officials.
Investigators did not believe the shooting involved a middle school student nor was it connected to the school in any way, but Houston Independent School District officials placed the school on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, police department officials said.Officers around 7:50 a.m. responded to a report of a shooting near the intersection of West Bellfort Avenue and South Gessner Road in southwest Houston, officials said.
Police detained two people at the scene of the shooting, officials said, but it was not immediately clear if those two people were witnesses or believed to have been responsible for the shooting.
