A Republican lawmaker in Tennessee resigned Thursday due to an ethics violation involving the Legislature’s workplace discrimination and harassment policy.

Rep. Scotty Campbell, vice chair of the House Republican Caucus, was among the GOP legislators who voted two weeks ago to expel two Black Democratic lawmakers for protesting in support of gun control on the House floor.

WTVF-TV first reported on the finding by the Ethics Subcommittee, which issued its decision on March 29 in a document addressed to Republican House Speaker Cameron Sexton. The document says the panel found Campbell violated the Legislature’s workplace discrimination and harassment policy. “I think conversations are consensual once that is verbally agreed to. If I choose to talk to any intern in the future, it will be recorded,” he said.

Connie Ridley, the General Assembly’s director of legislative administration, produced the Ethics Subcommittee’s findings document in response to a records request.

It became public Thursday. Republican Rep. Scotty Campbell had recently joined fellow Republicans in expelling two Black Democratic legislators for protesting in support of gun control on the state House floor. The brief Ethics Subcommittee findings document from late March did not provide specifics and said no more information would be released. Campbell’s resignation came hours after a Nashville TV station confronted him about sexual harassment allegations involving legislative interns. Campbell declined to provide a detailed account of what happened, telling the broadcaster: “I had consensual, adult conversations with two adults off property.”

Montana shelves GOP proposal to alter US Senate primaryMontana shelves GOP proposal to alter US Senate primaryA proposed change to next year’s Montana U.S. Senate primary that could have hurt Democratic Sen. Jon Tester’s reelection chances is likely dead. A legislative committee shelved the GOP-backed measure Wednesday. Some Republican lawmakers urged on by a GOP lobbyist wanted to alter the 2024 Senate primary in Montana so that only the top two candidates, no matter their party, would advance to the November election. That would have effectively blocked out third-party candidates, who Republicans blamed for draining away potential GOP votes during past attempts to unseat Tester.
