The grid operator's data show it has enough capacity to meet the high demand for power that’s expected to continue through a week of blistering temperatures.

After falling just shy of record electric consumption in Monday afternoon’s searing heat, the state grid operator’s projections show Texans could push demand to a new high Tuesday. Demand for electricity hit 85 gigawatts just before 5 p.m. Monday, about 500 megawatts shy of the record high demand set just over a year ago on Aug. 10, 2023.

says Texas grid could face increased risk of outages with loss of CPS Energy’s aging gas plants “ERCOT will continue to monitor conditions and provide any updates as needed,” it said in a statement. “Grid conditions are expected to be normal.” High temperatures in San Antonio are expected to be close to the record high of 107 degrees Tuesday afternoon and again Wednesday as high pressure creates a “heat dome” preventing heat from rising.

With help from Texas, wind-generated power set springtime records as coal continues to decline It takes about 1 megawatt to power 250 households during peak-use time. While power use is highest around 5 p.m., the state grid is at its most vulnerable beginning about 8 p.m. when the sun is down and the grid loses its cushion from solar farm output. That’s the period conservation can have the most impact. CPS Energy considered Monday a “Yellow Day,” which signifies a peak demand day.
