Texas A&M football position analysis: Running backs
Rueben Owens Rueben Owens is what Devon Achane should have been three years ago: A five-star prospect. Now Owens owns the task of taking over for the NFL-bound Achane, a four-star signee out of high school who exited the A&M program following his junior year ranked 12th on the Aggies’ all-time list with 3,543 yards, despite playing only three seasons., will be called upon immediately to carry the load in new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino’s scheme.
Achane averaged 5.6 yards per carry last season, and Amari Daniels matched that in much more limited action in 2022. Daniels put up similar numbers to Owens in the spring game with 47 yards on 10 carries, with a long rush of 15 yards on a touchdown scamper. Moss, who averaged 4.2 yards on a scant 27 carries last season, rushed for 26 yards on four carries in the spring game. The Aggies should be solid at running back with their top three choices to carry the ball, starting with Owens, provided the injury bug doesn’t bite the position like it did in 2019.
That’s when Ainias Smith had to shift from receiver to running back out of necessity in the Aggies’ Texas Bowl victory over Oklahoma State.
