A Catholic bishop has criticized lawmakers over the immigration debate, saying violent incidents in El Paso 'are extremely rare.'
Bishop Mark Seitz has seen countless immigrants come and go during his years of service in the southern border city of El Paso, telling Newsweek that challenging the policies and narratives of Texas Governor Greg Abbott and other officials is sometimes necessary to protect the most vulnerable.

What are we going through on the border every day?'He said that lawmakers 'very often' use isolated incidents that are 'replayed over and over and over' to give outsiders an impression of what the situation on the 1,950-mile-long border between the U.S. and Mexico is like.'There are claims of violence, especially given the high numbers in recent years,' he said. 'I think occasions when anything violent happened are extremely rare.
