The decision by the State Board of Education allows Heritage Classical Academy to begin...

Stuart Saunders, president of the Heritage Classical Academy board , and the academy’s Superintendent Oscar Ortiz pitch the school to members of the Texas State Board of Education in June 2022.The Texas State Board of Education voted Wednesday for Heritage Classical Academy to move forward with a planned campus in Northwest Houston, opening the door for the controversial charter school to begin expanding in the state after three failed applications.

In past years, the board has denied Heritage over concerns about its partnership with Hillsdale College in Michigan, a Christian-conservative university that is promoting so-called classical schools around the country through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Last year, Republican former member Matt Robinson of Friendswood accused the charter network of trying to “buy” the state board by donating to opponents of board members who voted against Heritage.

Wednesday's discussion was more muted than last year's when the debate stretched for hours and some board members became confrontational with Saunders and Heritage’s proposed superintendent.
