Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s campaign defended the governor’s directive calling for child abuse investigations into parents of transgender children who have received gender-affirming care.
seven states introduced measures targeting trans and nonbinary youths just in the first week of 2022 alone. The ACLU lawsuit notes no other state has equated minors receiving gender-affirming care to “child abuse” or restricted doctors from treating minors with gender dysphoria, however.
The Texas legislature rejectedthat would have classified the treatment as “child abuse” last year, prompting Abbott to instead issue the rule as a directive based on a legal opinion from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton—which the ACLU argues in its legal challenge exceeded the governor’s authority.
