AUSTIN — After five starry seasons as LBJ's head coach, Jahmal Fenner has been hired as the next director of high school relations for Texas, the team announced Monday evening. Fennec will replace Chris Gilbert, who left to become North Texas’ assistant head coach and tight ends coach at the end of the 2022 season.
Elevated to head coach at LBJ in 2018, Fenner led the Jaguars to a 49-13 record, three straight district titles and the school’s first state championship game berth in 2021. “I’ve been on the high school side for a while where I was able to encourage, facilitate and help a lot of kids reach their goals and dreams of getting to the collegiate level,” Fenner said in a statement. “I’m so grateful for that time and all I was able to do in leading a high school program. That prepared me for a position like this. Now, I’m looking forward to having the chance to do it from the other side, learning and helping with the process on the next level.
A former three-sport standout at Reagan, Fenner played cornerback and returned punts at UTEP and first ventured into coaching with the Arena Football League's Amarillo Dusters in 2007. Fenner would work as a graduate assistant back at UTEP and spend a year coaching in the Indoor Football League before joining then-LBJ coach Andrew Jackson’s staff in 2013.
Fenner served as LBJ's interim head coach throughout most of the 2017 season as Jackson battled cancer. He was named the Jaguars' next head coach in the wake of Jackson's death on Dec. 13, 2017.
