San Antonio’s Trey Martinez Fischer will lead House Democrats. Dallas’ Victoria Neave Criado heads the Latino group.
No vote tally was announced. Hinojosa, daughter of state Democratic Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa of Brownsville, moved to elect Martinez Fischer by acclamation. As the Democratic caucus’ new chairman, Martinez Fischer succeeds Grand Prairie Rep. Chris Turner, who is vacating his post after three sessions.
Hinojosa, 49, who resigned as board president of the Austin Independent School District in late 2015 to run for a central Austin seat long held by Democrat Elliott Naishtat, strongly endorsed last year’s walkout by House Democrats to protest a GOP-backed “election security” bill. Democrats said it was designed to discourage minorities and young people from voting.
“While he does engage in a lot of rhetorical excesses, he also is someone who has shown an ability to work within the system,” said Rice’s Jones. He said caucus members entered Wednesday’s decision with “no appetite for anyone in the Turner-Anchía mold.”
