Tom Fox/The Dallas Morning News)In the aftermath of the killings of students and teachers in Uvalde, it is difficult to have a conversation about mental health that doesn’t morph into a call for hardening school buildings. However, Texas’ mental health system for children also needs significant additional resources.

The one constant is that demand continues to outstrip resources. In the past year, roughly 2,656 Texas children languished on waiting lists for mental health services through the health and human service department’s Youth Empowerment Services Waiver program, Texans Care for Children reported. But there is nothing permanent about this stop-gap measure designed to bolster the state’s response before children return to school in the fall. And while that is a good idea, spending on mental health has to improve.
