Former U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, a moderate Republican and longtime critic of Donald Trump, announced his bid for the White House on Thursday morning, becoming the highest-profile Texan to join a growing GOP primary field.

The long-hinted-at announcement comes after the 45-year-old, who left Congress in 2021, has been spending a lot of time in early primary states such as New Hampshire, pushing a message of unity. Hurd is perhaps best known for a, which the two then-congressmen livestreamed and which drew national attention for a rare bipartisan showing. In Congress, Hurd frequently crossed party lines, including voting against GOP efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
He joins an already crowded GOP primary field with several other candidates who already have national profiles, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, Trump’s former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. In office, Hurd represented a massive stretch of the border from San Antonio to El Paso that was one of the most closely contested battlegrounds in the state. He won each of his three terms by a couple of percentage points and headed to Congress as a moderate unafraid to criticize his party's right flank.
Brendan Steinhauser, a Texas-based Republican strategist, said the anti-Trump lane will also be difficult, given Trump’s lasting popularity among Republicans.
