But it was Doswell Foundation CEO Beverly Fricke, who instigated talks of an aviation program as the university geared toward women at an alumni event.

At the event, Fricke told Carine Feyten, chancellor and president of Texas Woman’s University, about how her late husband, Kenneth Fricke, dreamed of starting a flight school. Fricke’s husband was Florence Doswell’s nephew and executor of her estate. Fricke said both her husband and aunt by marriage, Florence Doswell, would have loved to know the program was in the works. “She was a successful businesswoman and she always believed that women could do just about anything,” Fricke said.One track will focus on becoming a professional pilot, only requiring 1,000 hours of flying hours, because of the added instruction offered in the degree program. Without a bachelor’s program, a prospective pilot would have to log 1,500 hours of flight time to become a commercial pilot. The other track will focus on aviation management. Students can achieve the degree in four years.

Men have been admitted to both undergraduate and graduate programs at TWU since 1994, and the aviation program would be open to all genders. Men account for about 11% of the overall student population while women are about 89% of the population, according to Texas Woman’s University.Feyten said that the college has already spoken with
