Thanos may be referred to as the Mad Titan, but he's intelligent enough to recognize when an enemy deserves respect - even when nobody else does.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Considered by many to be Marvel Comics’ biggest bad, Thanos is one of comics’ coldest and most calculating cosmic criminals. With an incredibly devious intellect and a dark internal code to match, the Mad Titan has never been one to shy away from acknowledging a worthy foe. But the one Marvel hero Thanos actually respects isn’t someone fans would expect.
Deadpool vs. Thanos #3 by Tim Seeley, Elmo Bondoc, Ruth Redmond, and VC’s Joe Sabino finds the titular twosome working together to locate their mutual paramour Death outside the bounds of reality. They go about this by interrogating the Abyss Man, a Weapon X alum who had a direct role in the experiments which turned Wade Wilson into Deadpool.
Their prisoner tells Thanos little about Death’s whereabouts, instead willingly retelling Wilson’s many tortures at the hands of Weapon X. And upon hearing the origin of his unexpected ally, the Mad Titan even tells Deadpool, “Doomed from conception and yet you lived. Thrived, even. I…respect that.” Thanos And Deadpool Are Kindred Spirits For fans who know Thanos’ history, it’s hard to imagine he’s not also referring to himself when he’s complimenting Deadpool.
Knowing this about the Mad Titan’s past, it’s understandable that he’d feel a certain kinship with Wade Wilson, a seemingly failed Weapon X experiment who far outlasted many of his Department H peers. Adding to this is the fact that Deadpool is arguably Thanos’ main rival for the affections of Death – as well as being the only person she would talk to at the time of the story – and it’s easy to see why Thanos would recognize something in Deadpool that he sees in himself.
The Mad Titan Recognizes Deadpool’s Worth Thanos may be Marvel’s greatest villain, but even he can register when another entity deserves his respect. Ironically enough, Wade Wilson is probably the last character that any Marvel fan would even associate with the concept of respect. But if even Marvel Comics’ Thanos can give Deadpool his due, then the Merc With The Mouth truly is something special.
