The opening scene of The Mummy (1999) features an epic recreation of Ancient Egypt, and it was actually mostly achieved using practical effects.

With its majestic panorama of Thebes, it's hard to believe that the wild opening scene in The Mummy is not actually CGI. Over the heads of Anubis and other gods of Ancient Egypt, the opening shots of The Mummy eventually settle on High Priest Imhotep and his lover, Anck-su-namun, the prize of Pharaoh Seti I. The opening, which also features a narration by Oded Fehr's Ardeth Bay, paints a dramatic and epic picture of Ancient Egypt before the action switches to the early 20th century.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Upon its release in 1999, The Mummy was a successful blockbuster because of its clever blend of humor, action, and stunning visual effects, which were developed by Industrial Light & Magic. Once Imhotep is awakened from his slumber, much of the film is devoted to impressive CGI sequences, including reanimating Imhotep's corpse and those of his guards, sandstorms, and various plagues, but much of it was also practical.

ILM model maker Kim Smith leads the segment in the documentary outlining the immense undertaking at ILM to bring the ancient city, now located near modern-day Luxor, to life. Created with a lot of mixed media and based on photographs and archeological evidence of the site itself, the miniatures are a testament to the dedication and attention to detail of the team involved in their creation.

The Mummy's Blend Of Practical And CGI Effects Have Aged Well Whereas The Rock's Scorpion King CGI didn't work in 2001's The Mummy Returns, The Mummy has aged well because of its superior blend of practical and CGI effects. By not relying solely on CGI, the limitations of the technology at the time have not negatively impacted The Mummy in the long term, with the practical miniatures helping to ground a movie full of mummies and other supernatural elements.

As the opening sequence of The Mummy proves, the fact that the practical effects can't be differentiated from CGI doesn't detract from their efficacy. The sequence is still spectacular decades later and sets the tone of the entire movie, contrasting the epic majesty of Ancient Egypt with the ruins that remain. The Mummy's unique blend of computer-generated and practical effects not only looks great, but has also helped ensure it has stood the test of time.
